GWAR San Diego Concert reviews
GWAR rules, SoDo was not bad!
This was my 16th GWAR concert, so I'm a serious fan and veteran (if not as well-stained as some of the uberfans in the community) and frankly GWAR has never, ever let me down. I think they'll always have one of the best shows out there. They should not be compared to other "bands" because they're so much more. Trying to measure them like that is rather like trying to rate Rocky Horror Picture Show as just another trip to the movie theater...it's a completely different thing. GWAR is the ultimate cult classic concert experience. I was delighted to have taken a first-timer along, he will be back for more. I also love how down to earth and cool the guys in the group are, got to greet all of them and make some new friends among the openers and associates this year. The concert itself was amazing, for once I really enjoyed the openers (though I've always felt it takes some big brass ones to open for GWAR, since nothing on earth can compare.) I also love the new album, which they played several songs from. As for the venue, the staff was cool about getting us our passes and letting my under-21 friend run in early backstage w/escort to pee real quick (it was a desperate situation LOL) and security did a great job, kept us all safe and treated us well. I wish the SoDo had a balcony or elevated rear area, it makes for a harsh crowd when you have to be up front to see the show...and GWAR pits are quite brutal enough. At least when there is better elevated areas and public balconies, half the crowd is content to be back there and not fighting for the first 5 feet of the floor. Also...not that this has anything to do with show or venue...but if you're going to GWAR on a cold night, make sure to stash some extra warm layers in your car for after. Soaking wet in 30 degree temps is no fun, particularly when you're trying to wait by the bus for the band to get cleaned up and come out for hugs and hellos. I shivered my butt off even with a dry coat...wish I'd had a blanket.
